7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

In the Old Testament book of Exodus, God descended on Mt. Sinai in a great, thundering cloud of glory. It terrified the ISraelites and only Moses would go up to enter into it. In that cloud, God gave Moses the Law, summarized in the 10 Commandments. But that was not God’s final word. Something greater than the Law has arrived and we do not need Moses to bring God’s word down to us. That Word came down Himself. From the cloud, God said to Peter, James and John, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him!” Listen to Jesus, the Word of God. He speaks God’s truth. You are forgiven and loved!
