Mark 13:21-23
New International Version
21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

“Be on guard.” Some English Bibles say, “look out.” It is a translation of the Greek word, “blepo” which means “to see.” Jesus wants us to constantly be aware, on guard and on the look out for false saviors, fake prophets, and pretend shepherds who lead God’s people astray. That can include religious leaders, politicians, sports stars and celebrities, self-help gurus or anyone else who pretends to have the “key” to saving/fixing you, saving the country or saving the world. “Look out! Be on guard!” But those pretenders are NOT signs of the end. As Jesus said, “do not believe it.” He has told us these things so that we do not look for salvation in anything or anyone in this worldly life, but instead believe in His Word of forgiveness and salvation.
