Mark 7:20-23 New International Version
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

This list is quite broad. So are similar lists that the Apostle Paul gives in his letters. Some are obviously bad, like murder. But Jesus offers no hierarchy. Right next to murder and adultery are deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride. These are all issues of the heart! In Romans 6:1-14, the Apostle Paul says that in baptism we have “died” to sin. Did you know that the work of the Holy Spirit is death and resurrection?! God is not fooled by our attempts to cover up the disease of sin that infects our hearts. Instead, He wants to remove it completely! Washing your hands, trusting in our traditions, and trusting in our own goodness will not change our hearts. So, like David, we pray, “ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10).
