Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. Tue. September 29 Throughout the Bible “sleep” is often used to describe death. Both the “foolish” and the “wise” fall asleep. Falling asleep is not bad. In fact, the “sleep” of death is one of the most certain things about being human. Some people think that focusing on heaven and what comes after death causes us to miss what is happening right now. It is true that some people fall into that trap. But that is not what Jesus is talking about. He is actually teaching us that right now matters because we do not know how long he will delay. If we lose a job we do not know how long before we will find a new one. Is Jesus still with us in the waiting? If we lose a loved one is Jesus still with us? Or do we give up on him? Is Jesus just a vending machine who is supposed to give us sweet treats all the time? Do we walk away from him when the sweet treats stop coming? Jesus has promised to always forgive you, always love you, and always serve you. You can keep the “oil” of his faithfulness with you while you sleep.
