Matthew 2:13-15 New International Version
The Escape to Egypt 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[a]

The Gospel of Luke seems to have been Mary’s account of the birth of Jesus, while Matthew’s Gospel account seems to have come from Joseph. Joseph has received several dreams before this and each time his life gets harder! When he found out that his fiance was pregnant and he was not the father, an angel appeared in a dream and told him to take the baby as his own, which he did. That would have dramatically affected his reputation and life. Now, his life and the lives of Mary and the baby are in very real danger! What did he get himself into? Yet, this is a perfect story about the life of faith. Jesus does not make our lives in this world easier or more comfortable in a normal sense. In fact, trusting in Jesus might actually make life harder! Forgiving people is hard! Giving up control and trusting in God is hard! Following Jesus might mean doing hard things that other people think are weird or crazy, like going to church every Sunday! But God’s love is eternal!
