Exodus 32:1 New International Version
The Golden Calf 32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

This passage comes immediately after the Israelites left Egypt. The Egyptian god, Osiris, ruled the underworld and was associated with the life cycles of agriculture. The son of Osiris, named Horus, was often depicted as a falcon or a man with a falcon’s head. Many of the Egyptian Pharaohs were considered to be the incarnation of the god, Horus. When God sent the plagues he defeated all those Egyptian gods and revealed that HE alone ruled over the universe and over history. In the final plague, God proved that HE alone has the power to give and take life. And that invisible, great, powerful, and cosmic God desires a personal relationship. He is a “jealous” God who sent His Son to defeat death once and for all because He loves us.
