Mark 9:2-6 New International Version (NIV)
The Transfiguration 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Finally we get to the transfiguration! Remember that Peter only saw Jesus “halfway.” Here, Jesus is going to pull back the curtain completely! And what happens? When Jesus only seemed like a man Peter had the audacity to rebuke him about all that death and resurrection nonsense. Here, when faced with the full glory of Jesus’s divinity, Peter is terrified! This is why Proverbs 9:10 says that the “beginning of wisdom” is “fear of the Lord.” The glory, power and holiness of God is actually frightening. It is like getting too close to the sun. The power is simply too much for us to handle in our frail, weak, and profane bodies. Jesus is God and what did this “God-man” do? He died on the cross to forgive our sins and give us eternal life! No more fear. No more terror. Only forgiveness, mercy, grace, and love.
