Jesus Opens the 'Eyes to Our Hearts'!
Luke 24:28-31 New International Version
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

There is a spiritual awakening that happens here, but it is, at first, not nice or pleasant. In the story of Adam and Eve they eat the fruit that God had forbidden and their “eyes were opened.” They understood that they were sinful and naked and they felt shame and guilt for the first time. The same words are used for these men. Their “eyes were opened” so that they could realize how blind they truly were. They thought Jesus was the ignorant one, but now their “eyes were opened” to how foolish and ignorant they were. They did not have faith or believe the preaching of the women that Jesus was alive. We easily fall into this trap and it is our greatest sin. We remain “blind” to what God is doing because we think we have everything figured out. Jesus comes to “open the eyes” of our hearts to the reality of our sinful ignorance and pride and how HE has forgiven and saved us.
