Jesus the True Groom

John 2:9-11 New International Version

9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

While the groom was in charge of the supply of wine, this “head steward” would be like the manager of a catering company who was in charge of preparing food and serving drinks. He was confused that the groom would wait and serve the good wine once the guests had already drunk the first supply. He didn’t know what was going on and neither did the groom! But the servers did and so did the disciples of Jesus. This was a “revelation” of the glory of Jesus. Jesus was not showing off for his friends. Jesus revealed that he came to be the true groom who supplied the best wine in a completely strange and unexpected way: his death and resurrection!
