Sometimes we read the Bible too seriously. What I mean is that we think of faith as something that is so grave and weighty that we miss how funny it can be! These two verses are some of the silliest in the whole Bible. These two men not only could not recognize Jesus, but they treated him like he was some ignorant visitor from a far away land. Just think about it! They told Jesus about what happened to Jesus, as if THEY were the experts, because they could not recognize Jesus. Who was the ignorant one? We can easily fall into the trap of thinking that God is “out of the loop” on what has been really going on. But He knows far more about what is going on than we ever will! Instead, we need to take ourselves less seriously, maybe even laugh at our own ignorance and then ask Jesus to fill us in on what HE is up to.
