Mark 1:25-26 New International Version (NIV)
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

Some people do not like the phrase, “shut up!”, but it is one of the best ways to translate what Jesus said. Why? The Gospel writer Mark says that Jesus “rebuked the spirit.” Jesus is giving this spirit a “tongue-lashing.” Unclean spirits lie, deceive, manipulate, and “spin” the truth. Jesus comes and says, “Shut up!” Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you can, too! Unclean spirits might tell you that you are unloved and you can say, “Shut up! I am a beloved child of God!” Unclean spirits might say you are “good enough” to get into heaven and you can say, “Shut up! I have no right to heaven! But thanks be to God, Jesus has made me a citizen of the kingdom of God!”
