Mark 1:27-28 New International Version (NIV)
27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

There is a song by the band, The Eagles, called “New Kid in Town.” It talks about a boy who moves in and everybody loves him. He gets the girl and everything seems great, until a new “new kid” moves to town. The third time the chorus is sung it changes slightly to say: “Where you been lately? There's a new kid in town. Everybody loves him, don't they? And he's holding her. And you're still around…” In his public ministry, Jesus quickly became famous for his “new teaching with authority,” but this is a threat to the “old teaching” which, apparently, does not have authority. This makes Jesus a threat and eventually leads to his death. The Gospel is always the new “new kid” with “authority” that sets people free. But The Law will not go down without a fight. The Law continues to make demands, accuse and threaten. But Jesus, the new “new kid,” has won “the girl,” made her his bride and will feast with her forever in the always “new heaven and new earth.”
