Mark 8:34-9:1 New International Version (NIV)
The Way of the Cross 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” 9 And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”

Immediately after Jesus rebuked Peter he made a radical statement about the kingdom of God. Being a citizen in God’s kingdom means losing everything that this world thinks is important! Everything! What does a huge bank account matter when you die? What does a list of degrees and diplomas mean when you’re gone? What good are thousands of acres of land if you can’t farm anymore? What matters more, having successful children in this life or having faithful children living with you in eternal life? That is the power of the Gospel! It transforms everything that we think is important. The death and resurrection of Jesus for you and me puts everything in a completely different perspective. Wealth becomes a gift to bless others. Education becomes a gift to help lift up others. Even land becomes a gift to feed others. Our families become a gift to make heaven more populous! Whoever “loses” their life for the gospel will truly save it!
