Ask...Seek...Knock...and the Door Will Be Open!

Genesis 4:6-7 New International Version

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Again, read this text very carefully. Sin is already present. Sin is already at the door of Cain’s heart waiting to pounce and devour him. In other words, Cain has become blind to the fact that he is already a sinner! This is something that we cannot stand. We hate being told that we are sinners, rebels, and reprobates. But that is our identity. God has declared that we are sinners. Nothing we can do will remove sin from our hearts. It is true that we should fight against our own sin, but it is always there lurking by the door waiting to devour us. We cannot overcome it on our own. Instead, we need God’s mercy, the very thing that Cain refuses to seek and ask for! Yet, as Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matt. 7:7).
