Christian Faith is Trust That God Will Follow Through on the Promise!

Romans 4:13-15 New International Version

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

The Greek word “epangelia” is often translated into English as “promise.” That is a good translation! My dictionary of ancient Greek (yes, I have one and it is huge) says that “epangelia” means: “promise, pledge, oath, declaration to do something with the implication of obligation to carry out what was stated.” I love that last part: “obligation to carry out what was stated.” That is what God did with Abraham and with us! God made a promise and God is obliged to carry out what was stated! Christian Faith is the trust that God has, can and will follow through on that obligation.
