A few years ago a relative who farms shared that during a bad dry period he
had to choose to either pay $30,000+ to spray his crops in the hope that it
would eventually rain or not spray his crops and risk lower yields. The Greek
word Jesus uses to describe the Holy Spirit is “paraclete.” Sometimes this is
translated as “helper” or “advocate.” It describes a defense attorney who
“advocates” for your cause. One of the primary things that the Holy Spirit
does is advocate God’s case to your heart. When our hearts are troubled
the Holy Spirit “advocates” to us and for us by pointing us to the truth and
our greatest line of defense: Jesus has died and rose again to save us. God
will never leave us nor forsake us no matter what happens. We have big and
serious decisions to make and many important things will happen in our
lives. But with the Holy Spirit defending our hearts with the good news of
salvation we can live with hope and joy, instead of fear and anxiety.
